Review: Earl Sweatshirt

If you’re into hip hop, and you’ve never heard Earl Sweatshirt before, then you’re not into hip hop.
And you need to be.

Objectivity aside, Earl Sweatshirt is dope. DOPE.

A former member of LA collective Odd Future (think Tyler, the Creator & Frank Ocean), Earl has already featured on some incredible albums and collaborated with some of hip-hop’s biggest names (Vince Staples, RZA, and alright, it’s his rap on Frank Ocean’s Super Rich Kids). However, Earl’s new project is all him, from the performance to the production. Definitely as dark as the title suggests, Earl’s latest work on ‘I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside’ (2015) is gritty, lo-fi, emotionally raw hip-hop that’ll either envelop or repel you with its heavy content, unassuming beats, and often hook-less compositions.

Whatever your reaction, there’s no denying this kid has mad skills, poetic lyricism, and a passion that’s hard to ignore once you’ve listened to his aggressively honest delivery.

Oh yeah, and he’s 21.
